Tankless water heating on cruise ships

Tankless water heaters are water heaters designed to heat water on the fly. Rather than burning a whole tank of water which consumes large amounts of energy that is wasted if the water is not used (and it also takes time to heat the water up), the tankless water heater is designed to provide hot water on demand.

A conventional water heating method on ships is to use the water which cools the engine to heat the water used by the occupants of the vessel via a heat exchanger. This means the? Wasted’ heat energy from the generator is instead used for a purpose, making the system much more efficient and cheaper to run as a result. This does require the engine be running, but in a cruise ship, this does not present a problem as the engine is often always running while the ship is cruising.

Early tankless water heaters used gas, and some models still use gas, especially on some smaller vessels. The gas models require the installation of a carbon monoxide detector however for safety. However, the gas models are often reserved for smaller private vessels; cruise ships will typically use the waste heat from the engine to heat the water or electric heaters, or a combination of both.
